Dectalk Archive through BTSync
About the archive
This is the archive for speech synthesizer creations, especially those that use dectalk. This decTalk archive BTSync share will allow any person to download the archive. However, if files are written in this folder, they will not be shared automatically with the rest.
Content Warning
WARNING!
Some files in this archive contain content that might be deemed unsuitable by various people. Since this content is relevant to the topic of speech synthesizer creations, it has been added and can also be found here. You have been warned. If you find this offensive, you have our appologies but the content will not be removed. There is an effort to set up a restricted archive that contains none of these files, but this project is still being initiated and is not ready for use at this time. Listen and/or read at your own risk.
Contribute to the archive
To contribute, you must e-mail
dectalkarchive@gmail.com.
If you are a new artist, please specify this and which name you want to use. If I don't know who you are, I am less likely to upload your creations and they would go in the miscellaneous folder.
If your file or files are small, you can send them as attachments to your e-mail. If not, you might want to use a file sharing site. My reccomendation would be dropbox, where you can send links to files. If you don't already have a dropbox account, you can sign up for a free one here for a free 2.5 gigabytes of space.
NVDA and BTSync
If you use NVDA, there is a BTSync add-on that improves the accessibility of the program. You can download this here.
What is this stuff?
Here is a description of these folders. You should explore yourself, but this is a simple description of the first-level folders in the archive.
- artists/ This folder will contain audio files of people's productions. They are organized by the person who wrote them.
- Miscellaneous/ This folder contains files that we don't know from where they came. If you can help us figure out the correct place to put them, please e-mail me at
dectalkarchive@gmail.com.
- Red_dwarf/ This contains dectalkified transcripts of episodes of the British situation comedy Red Dwarf. I am currently unaware of their legality, so if you represent the BBC, it would help if you can get into contact with me.
- software and manuals/ This contains software for speech synthesizers. If you want dectalk speak windows, the SAPI5 and/or NVDA dectalk, windows versions of older synthesizers, utilities for use with SAPI, or files for dectalk hardware, you can find them in here.
- Synthesizers/ This contains examples of many synthesizers. Please note that many of these are old hardware synths and cannot be acquired.
- text/ This contains text files for dectalk. Most of these are songs. Please note that the .dec files are text, just with a different extention. You can use the playdec.zip file in the software folder or rename the extention.
- Texts in Ogg/ This contains .ogg audio files of many songs. I don't know who wrote these, so e-mail me if you know.
Distributing the archive
The purpose of this archive is to get this content into the hands of anyone who wants it. So, you are always permitted to give anyone else any of this, or the keys and instructions to join the folder. To make things easy, you can find these keys and instructions right here:
- First, if you use NVDA, you will want to install the BTSync add-on. This makes the application more accessible. The link to this is
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11231100/BTSync.nvda-addon
Install it like you would any other add-on package.
- Then, you'll need the bitTorrent Sync program itself. You can download it at
http://www.bittorrent.com/sync/downloads/complete/os/windows
- The installation process is a little weird. You will get to a stage where it will ask you if you have a secret. You will want to select the "No, I don't" option here.
- It will also ask you where you want to store your synced shares. I would suggest you create a folder for these, something like "synced folders", under which all of your content will go.
- Using windows explorer, go into the folder that you created for syncs, and create a folder in here called "dectalk archive" or whatever you would like it called.
- When you have finished the installation process, open BTSync. There will be a list of folders, containing your folder.
- Navigate around the BTSync window until you find the add folder button and activate it (it only worked with the space bar when I tried).
- In the "folder secret" box, paste the following line
BFQETEL6FG4ERS3NAGHE2BXR6VMEWC7NH
- Navigate to the browse button and select your "dectalk archive" folder.
- Press OK and close the window with alt+f4.
- You're good to go. The content in the dectalk archive folder will begin to download. You will also be sending this data to others on the folder.
About legality and the archive
To my knowledge, the songs created with synthesizers are not violations of copyright. Certainly, the little skits that are spoken through these synthesizers do not violate anything. However, if something does violate copyright or gives information relevant to breaking copyright law, I reserve the right to remove it at any time. This would, for example, include links to pirated software or content. Just do me a favor and don't post anything like that. I would hate to have to go all legal on you, and the decTalk community wouldn't like it much either. Instead, let's make this fun, as it was always meant to be.
